The Volga Cars


Produced from nineteen fifty six onwards, the Volga was the successor of the GAZ M20 Pobeda, a four door passenger car made from nineteen forty six up until nineteen fifty eight. The Volga is manufactured by GAZ, an automotive company created in the late nineteen twenties due to an arrangement between the Soviet Union and Ford. The Volga was popular and was the choice of many people who were among the so called "Nomenklatura", a class of elite people who held important roles within the Soviet Union in areas such as government, education and industry. The car was also used for many service vehicles such as police and ambulances.

At its highest, the production of the Volga marque reached in excess of one hundred thousand units per annum during the early nineteen nineties. Unfortunately since then the figures have been on a downward curve, mainly due to the economic downturn Russia experienced which drastically reduced the demand for high end cars. By the turn of the millennium the output was half of what it was at its peak. Volga managed to establish export links for their vehicles and by two thousand and four the output rose to seventy thousand, a figure still short of their early nineties success but well on the way to recovery.

At present the Volga line up is composed of the 3102 (top of the range vehicle), the 310221 estate, the 311055, and the 31105 (least expensive model). After acquiring the license to the Sebring model (Chrysler), Volga made some adjustments and alternations and the end vehicle was named the Volga Siber. This model is to be added to the present day line up.
